It is a show where it can make you laughing your guts out one moment, and crying the next.Įven though they slap on a lot of characters in this series, there is a complicated backstory for a lot of them that are very well done. For example, there are episodes filled with silliness and are made just to make the person watching laugh, without any actual effect to the plot, and there are also episodes that are filled with drama and action, which make you sad and cry. The plot is not the thing that amazes me, it is the way that they present it and the content. Gintoki, a samurai, is now a freelance, that does any job as long as he gets money. Even so, it knows when to call back if needed, and pauses some stupidity in combat for truly epic fight scenes that do justice to Gintoki and the crew.The story is set in Feudal Japan and aliens have taken over earth, and now samurai are out of work, and they have to find new jobs because of the sword ban.
The episode focuses on the Odd Jobs who mess up Amaraos retirement and then they decide to make amends by gathering up a team for the game.

The protagonist of the series is named Tsubasa, who dreams of making it big in the world of football. There’s a bit of that signature Gintama humor in every scene, even if you aren’t expecting it. Captain Tsubasa is a sports anime that covers football. They’ve come a very long way to be safe and watching them come together and work feels just as good as uniting with some of the personalities who have ascended in Gintama as a whole.īut here’s an important question: is it still fun even if it’s more serious topics and action-packed fights? Absolutely. It spends a lot of time doing justice to these characters while also making sure it is focused on the main trio. But Gintama manages to adapt as much as the running time of the film allows, and what follows is a film that shows us how faithful anime adaptations can be. It has to be heard to be believed.Īs Gintoki and the rest of the team work to bring peace to the universe despite Utsuro’s machinations, The Very Final is sure to bring back all the faces you knew and loved from across the series to give them pertinent reasons to return to the film.
It’s surprisingly approachable, fun, and even tries to catch up with viewers with a few manga-like scenes and a musical surprise that I’m not ruining here. But distilling a major conflict into a massive good-versus-evil showdown helps it become interesting even to those who are not as up-to-date with the saga as others. This story thread is a great way to attract new viewers, although it’s doubtful that someone who hasn’t followed Gintama for at least some time now and then would see him at all.

It’s an intense battle that continues to escalate, with Shouyou revealing his true intentions: to help him and Utsuro end lives, free their souls from years and years of eternal torment. They are working to collect some kind of energy source called Altana to revive the child form of Yoshida Shouyou, one of the divided personalities of the immortal Utsuro. The Very Final begins with Gintoki, Takasugi and Katsura battling their way through a sea of Tendoushuu soldiers, a group of some of the “truest” rules on earth, with their motherboard high above a structure called the Terminal. It’s a shtick that could get old very quickly over 350 episodes, but instead you learn to love frontman Gintoki and the rest of the crew like a dysfunctional family.įor all its silliness, however, Gintama is still able to weave together a solid Shonen narrative, much like Naruto or Jujutsu Kaisen. Shows like Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt and Excel Saga have long held the crown for their raunchy humor, and we can’t forget about shows like Prison School or Golden Boy, but Gintama takes things to the next level, with entire episodes off-screen – Color, surreal jokes and a snappy confidence in every character. Since its inception, it has taken the limits of what anime humor is capable of, stretching it well beyond what many would consider acceptable. Gintama is perhaps one of the funnest anime, and the genre as a whole. Thankfully, it’s awesome, and the farewell fans deserve when the disrespectful saga wraps things up one last time. As such, as the title suggests, this is the last (yes, we’re really serious this time!) Ending to a masterfully confident and intriguing series.
